The importance of a good password manager is undeniable these days. Even if the general tendency is to use a “master log-in,” such as Facebook, Twitter or Google credentials, to access various online accounts, there are still plenty of services that require individual accounts.
Available for $29.99/€23.95, Sticky Password Pro could become the solution of your choice for storing passwords along with other snippets of information that must be kept safe. This includes usernames and passwords for web accounts and applications, bookmarks, identities and memos.
For a short period of time, Sticky Password Pro is available for $19.99, exclusively on Softpedia.
The application offers several encryption algorithms to encrypt the database, among which the military-grade AES; it can also automatically fill in log-in credentials as well as online forms.
For convenience’s sake, the application can also be launched in portable form, so you can use it on any computer straight from a removable device. Even more, it works with all popular web browsers and even some of the less known ones, via a custom extension called “caption button.”
This integrates in the browser and offers access to all entries in the database and the tools available in the application: virtual keyboard, password generator and the history of the countersigns it created.
The interface, which has been redesigned in this version, makes it easy to navigate. However, you won’t need to access it too frequently once you configure the application and build the database.
Sticky Password Pro’s simple layout lets you navigate through the information in the database based on the purpose of each entry. All listings except identities can be organized into groups for easy finding.
There is also a search function that scours the entire database to return a result for the query. Furthermore, to make the entire operation really fast, results are shown as you type. Despite the fact that the operation also takes into consideration the links of the accounts, the entire operation is very fast; depending on your entries, you may often find what you’ve been looking for just by typing the first two or three letters of the query.
Unlike other software of the same feather, when adding an account of any sort, Sticky Password Pro offers a little more than just storing the username and password. The options allow automatic log-in to that account, measurement of the password strength, as well as the possibility to set the countersign to expire at a specific date (and when the day is due, the application will issue a notification).
Moreover, you can choose the account to be launched by the default web browser or any that is supported by the application; and the choices include all major browsers (Opera, Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer) plus Flock and SeaMonkey.
Should a page display a more peculiar web form that Sticky Password can’t detect, there is the option to manually configure the fields that have to be filled with your credentials.
As far as auto log-in is concerned, we encountered some trouble with multiple credentials for the same web service. You can use them, but it’s a bit of a hassle since you cannot configure each log-in of the same account to be used with different URLs, so both entries have to share the same link, thus generating a conflict.
Not everything went smoothly during our testing, as we were not always presented with the option to choose the account we wanted to sign in with. In some cases, the application informed that it was unable to punch in the password and sent the details to the clipboard instead, for manual pasting in the appropriate field; the clipboard would be cleared after a few seconds.
Other times we had to launch the accounts from the caption button in order to log with the desired account. But the application also happened to miss the target fields that had to be populated with the account details.
Still on the downside, split credentials are not supported. These are extended log-ins that require additional information, besides username and password. Such examples are to be encountered especially with online banking accounts.
The
applications officially supported by Sticky Password are not many but include instant messaging software, email, FTP and online storage clients. It may also work with other software.
Storing bookmarks in the portable version of this password manager and form filler is a great way to carry your favorite links with you and keep them safe at the same time. Just like in the case of web and app accounts, you can organize them into groups.
The easiest way to add your favorite links is to use the “import” function, which retrieves passwords and data stored in supported browsers and other password handlers.
Configuring Sticky Password Pro reveals that, behind the simple interface and easy log-in, there is a program built for a wide array of users. You can create lists with websites and software that should be ignored by the application, change the storage path of the database and the encryption algorithm.
Additional settings include modification of the authorization method. The choices provided by the developer let you unlock Sticky Password with a USB device, with a Bluetooth device or with a master password. There is also the possibility to lock the application after a specific period of inactivity.
Authentication using a Bluetooth device is quite comfortable, because the moment your phone is out of Bluetooth range, Sticky Password locks up automatically. When you get back in range, it’ll unlock on the spot.
The caption button that gets embedded in the web browsers as an extension or add-on is a core component as it provides easy access to all log-in entries. It is also responsible for detecting the credential fields on websites and prompting you to save them to Sticky Password.
This extension features everything you need to log into an account, create a new one, generate passwords, launch bookmarks or pick identities to fill forms up.
The Good
Besides providing secure storage for sensitive data such as personal details and usernames and passwords, it also facilitates filling them into the appropriate fields on a web page by doing it automatically. You can create a portable version, which is fully functional as far as filling is concerned.
The entire database is encrypted with AES-256 algorithm by default, but you have a wide range of options to pick from.
Importing data is pretty versatile as the function can be used for both bookmarks and passwords from browsers and other managers.
The Bad
We had our share of trouble when testing multiple log-ins for the same account. It all worked out for us, but quirks may still occur.
Support for split credentials has not been introduced, yet.
The Truth
Sticky Password may not be the most popular manager for automatically filling your log-in data, but the modifications brought in the current release really make it a great contender.
The bottom line is that it is easy to use and it fits into all popular web browsers.
